    The End

Today was my last day at holaciudad.com. As always, I can’t believe how fast the semester passed! I was particularly sad to say goodbye; I really enjoyed interning at holaciudad.com and think it was a great opportunity.

I was busy up to the last couple of minutes. I revised the articles I wrote about the National Zoo and the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress will be published sometime in the next several weeks, which makes it the last article I contributed to holaciudad.com. I also ensured that the site calendar is set for the month of April and wrapped up several other projects I had going.

    Last Couple of Weeks

The last couple of weeks have flown by so quickly! I can’t believe it is already the last week of my internship.

As always I continue to be busy, during the course of the semester I have written over 20 articles for holaciudad.com. I have drafted the five articles that are part of my ‘”free activities” series for the website. The articles are on: the Cherry Blossom Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Art Museum of the Organization of American States/ the Smithsonian Latino center, the National Zoo, and the Library of Congress.  The articles on the zoo and the library have yet to be published.

Overall, great job at your internship! I really enjoyed your reflections and insight, and your internship seemed very unique but perfect for your major!

Who Knew This Would Be Useful?

I intern at a communications/media+public relations firm. I am not a communications student in the least bit, nor am I too interested in the field. I intern here because they are working on a campaign in support of Alta Gracia union-made, living wage apparel. Labor Rights is my prime interest.

So it makes sense when I was super surprised when I ended up using one of the skills I learned interning here in a recent organizing campaign at campus. I’m sure many people heard about the controversy surrounding the grant that the university refused to sign that would have gave the university $300,000 in federal funds for sexual assault educational programs and resources for victims of sexual violence. As soon as I heard about this, I immediately plugged into the committee that was planning the student response to the University’s reactions and put some of my organizing experience to use.

    Busy In the City

    What I’ve Been Up To:

As I gear up for the last stretch of the semester I find myself busy inside and outside of the classroom.  I have been at holaciudad.com long enough to understand my role well enough to create work for myself in addition to the work Laura gives me. (More …)

Like you state, you definitely have a good grasp now of the major national and community-level issues facing Latinos which I think will be valuable insight as you move forward in both your academic and career paths!

    Spring Is In The Air

As the second half of this semester marches forward I’m caught between wanting it to be over and to never end. During Spring break I was able to rest from both school and my internship though both were on my mind as I worked and attended a wedding. Never has what I’m doing in class and my internship duties been so closely related.

Looking Forward: Outcomes of the Mid-Semester Review

My mid-semester meeting was low-key and went well.  I will also continue to write educational articles and other articles Laure needs written, to pitch article ideas, to perform site upkeep, and to add events to the events calendar. However, I will also begin to write a series of articles (at least one a week) on free things to do in D.C.  Laura and I discussed the new project during the review, however when we outlined the internship we agreed that I would create a new element for holaciudad.com community page during March and April.

During the meeting I proposed several ideas for my project: a series describing legal processes such filing taxes, enrolling in school, buying a house, ect; a series profiling main organizations in the D.C. area that work with the Latino community; and finally a series telling about free activities to do in the D.C. area.
