    On The Outside Looking In

Turning in my badge was difficult.  For the past three months, it has been my key to a door I’ve been itching to open for years.  Unlike “unsecured” workplaces, I can’t just walk in and say hi whenever I want.  I need to be invited, approved, and escorted.  Now that my internship is over, I’m an outsider.

I know that sounds incredibly dramatic, but I was sad to leave my office.  The people are incredible, both in my office, and the foreign service officers passing through for training.  I made some great connections.  Being at the Foreign Service Institute, I learned a lot about myself and about how I proceed from here.  Although I am excited to catch up on sleep and go back to being a student for a few weeks.

I plan to take the Foreign Service Officer Test this summer.  If I pass, my training would start shortly after graduation next year.  In the mean time, I plan to intern in the private sector and on the Hill so that I can have something to compare my first internship to.  This was an incredible experience, and I loved every minute!

    The End

In the other internships I’ve had, the end of an internship was a big deal. There was usually lunch, a thank you email, I even had once coworker cry once. Since many of us interns ended on Friday the 5th, and only a few interns were going out to lunch with their respective supervisors, the rest of us decidedly to plan ourselves a little lunch in our own honor. It was not a big deal but it was nice to be together on our last lunch. In keeping with tradition, we went to Sweet Greens and then sat outside and talked for a while about what we had learned here, as well as our personal lives. While there was no company lunch, no thank you card, no tears, I did get two hugs and a chance to spend lunch with some of my new friends. So here goes, the final “Things I have learned” list:

    Thats all Folks.

As the title of this post suggests my time as a summer intern at Women for Women is over. I packed up my Fiji picture, all the goodies my boss gave me and headed on my way, and might I say I headed into a pretty intense 10 minute rain storm. Holding my bag of now wet swag I headed out into the post-internship world. I have one day of work left this entire summer and then in 2 short weeks I head off on my newest adventure, Prague! This summer has been an adventure of it’s own kind for me and I definitely learned a whole lot. I ended my last post with an exclamation of what I know I don’t want so let’s pick up there.
